Better Demolition Through Chemistry?

Better Demolition Through Chemistry?

Concrete demolition is a fairly tried and true art at this point. Concrete removal is typically done with jackhammers, sledgehammers, san angelo bars and pry bars. For really big jobs people sometimes use explosives to shatter rock or concrete. But a new player has stepped onto the scene. Chemistry.

While still in its infancy many demolition contractors are using chemicals to demolish concrete. Basically it works like this. You have your concrete slab, you drill a specific pattern of holes in your concrete slab and then you inject a chemical into the drill holes. You leave this chemical to set for a certain period of time (typically between 12 and 24 hours), and it expands and splits the concrete slab. No fuss, no muss, no dirt, and no big bang.

It is easy to see the upside to this type of demolition. You effectively limit dust and the possibilities of accidents, and let the chemicals do the work.

Doesn’t sound as fun though.
